I cannot help but think that the number of notes is not just related to the video/still variable (which is huge), but also to what the video is frozen on — the YouTube still seems kind of boring to me and doesn’t really tell what story might be hiding in the video.  On the other hand, the still photo with the “Say Something Nice” visual right up front starts telling a story…

Last Monday I posted the video for Improv Everywhere’s Say Something Nice to Tumblr.  It got 81 notes.  The next day I posted a collage of 2 photos from the project.  It has almost 34,000 notes and is still growing by about a thousand a day one week later.

Hypothesis: a good photo has a better chance of going viral on Tumblr than a good video.  Perhaps because people just scan their crowded dashboards quickly and don’t always hit play?

  9. maxistentialist said: People also tend to reblog things they’re already familiar with and like, so it may be that in that 24-hour gap, a lot of influential Tumblrs heard about Say Something Nice elsewhere and were more likely to reblog it.
